Stogies: The Beginning

April 5th, 2010

It is widely believed that Christopher Columbus’ crew discovered cigars while exploring Cuba. The Cuban natives smoked a crude form of the modern day cigar during religious rites. The cigar was wrapped with maize and full of tobacco leaves. Columbus’ crew swiftly became accustomed to smoking the cigar and brought back samples of the “Golden Leaf” to Spain. Initially, the smoking of cigars was regarded as a pagan ritual punished by imprisonment. In fact, one of Columbus’ crew was detained for smoking. After some years, cigar smoking became universally accepted. Finally, Spain would build a complete industry round cheap cigars. Seville, Spain was at the centre of this and is recognized as being the birthplace of the modern cigar.

Initially, Spain imported the raw materials from Cuba and assembled the cigars themselves. However, in 1821 Spain allowed Cuba to manufacture Cigars and hence the Cuban cigar was born. In appreciation for Spain’s kind gesture, the Cubans would deliver a box of their best cigars to the Spanish king each year. These cigars were the legendary Trinidad’s.

Cigars become popular in the United States in the Lincoln years. Factories started to open in New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. The term stogie is essentially named after Conestoga, Pennsylvania where one of the first cigar factories were built. The cigar industry did well up until the 1960’s when smoking became more of a health concern amongst Americans. At the same time, the US imposed an embargo against Cuba making it illegal for US citizens to import goods from Cuba. Today Cigars are back and are becoming highly popular amongst ladies and men.

The Tradition of Pipes

April 2nd, 2010

A Calumet is a ceremonial smoking pipe used by some indigenous American countries. These Old World Pipes were smoked to seal a covenant or contract, or to supply requests in a religious ceremony. “Calumet ” is a Norman word, first employed by Norman-French settlers in Qubec to describe the ceremonial pipes they saw in use among the 1st countries folks of the area. The name came into English-language use as a popular term for a ceremonial pipe, though in the cultures in query it is more common for a culturally-specific term to be used. A standard material for calumet pipe bowls is red pipestone or catlinite, a fine-grained easily-worked stone of a rich red color of the Coteau des Prairies, west of the Big Stone Lake in South Dakota. The pipestone quarries have traditionally been neutral ground among warring tribes, as folk from multiple nations went to the quarry to obtain the sacred pipestone. A variety of herbal tobacco or mixture of herbs was often reserved for special smoking occasions, with each region’s people using the plants that were hereabouts considered to have special qualities or a culturally condoned foundation for ceremonial use. Some northern Sioux folks used long, stemmed pipes for rites while others eg the Catawbas in the southeast used ceremonial pipes formed as round, footed bowls with a tubular smoke tip projecting from each cardinal direction on the bowl. Calumets and other indigenous American ceremonial pipes have regularly been given the misnomer, “peace pipe” ; this is a western european construct based totally on only 1 type of pipe and one way it was employed. Various types of ceremonial pipes have been employed by multiple indigenous American cultures, with the style of pipe, materials smoked, and rites being wholly original to the distinct religions of those nations. In ceremonial use, the smoke is thought to carry prayers to the attention of the Creator or other forceful spirits. Lakota custom has it that White Buffalo Calf lady, brought the Chanunpa to the people, and instructed them in its symbolism and rites. According to oral practices, and amply illustrated by pre-contact pipes in museums and tribal and private holdings, some ceremonial pipes are adorned with feathers, fur, human or animal hair, beadwork, quills, carvings or other items having significance for the owner. Other pipes are extremely simple. Many aren’t kept by a person but are instead held jointly by a medication society or similar ceremonial organization. Traditionally, First Americans who utilized the bow and arrow also employed bow drills that used hard white quartz points which, when mixed with water, could bore out even the toughest of pipestones. Early native americans employed moistened rawhide strips rolled in crushed white quartz and stretched with a bow handle to shape and coarse the pipes. The efficiency of such bow stone saws in cutting and slabbing a giant piece of red pipestone is sort of surprising given their appearing simplicity. Pipes were also formed and roughed with hard sandstones, afterward polished with water, then sanded with progressively finer and finer abrasive grit and animal hide, ultimately being rubbed with fat or facial oils to complete polishing.
